Netaji award to Suu Kyi in March

The presentation of the Netaji Subhas Award for 2007 to Burma's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi for her outstanding contribution to the struggle for restoring democracy in her country has been postponed till March.
The presentation of the Netaji Subhas Award for 2007 to Burma's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi for her outstanding contribution to the struggle for restoring democracy in her country has been postponed till March.

Earlier it was decided that the award would be given to a representative of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy on her behalf on Netaji's birthday on January 23 this year.

The award ceremony will be held in Mahajati Sadan auditorium, Kolkata on March 19.

"We decided to give the Netaji Award 2007 to Aung San Suu Kyi to honour her struggle against the Burmese military rulers," said Debabrata Biswas, Secretary General of the Netaji Subhas Foundation.

In 1939, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose led the "Anti Compromise Conference" against British rulers in Ramgarh now in Jharkhand state.

Netaji Subhas Foundation sent a communiqué to Suu Kyi's party on December 27, 2006, conveying the foundation's decision. "We are yet to receive information as to who will come to Kolkata to receive the award on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi," said Devarajan, Cultural Secretary, All India Forward Bloc, who is a member of the Foundation.

Since Suu Kyi is under house arrest in Burma for over a decade, she cannot personally receive the award. Leaders of the NLD in exile will arrive in Kolkata to accept the award.

Burma's hero Suu Kyi's father, Late Gen Aung San, had supported Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose when he entered Burma in 1943 leading the Indian National Army to fight Anglo-American forces.

In a separate function in Netaji Bhavan -- Krishna Bose, Chairperson, Netaji Research Bureau told Mizzima that they have no idea about such an award to Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Earlier, however, the Research Bureau has given awards to various personalities for their contribution on Netaji. Eminent Indian film maker Shyam Benegal and actor Sachin Khedekar, who played Netaji in Benegal's film, were jointly given this award last year.

The Netaji Subhas Foundation observed January 23 this year as "Deshprem Dewas".
