A group of monks from Tharthana Mern Daing monastery was arrested by police in Pegu, Burma this afternoon, an eyewitness said.

The group which included senior and young monks was taken away by the police at about 2 p.m. in cars, he added.
"I don't know why the authorities took them away. I think they are key players who have been demanding that the Burmese military junta release the 88 generation student leaders and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," a monk told IMNA.
The monks had said earlier that if the junta does not release and concede their demands they would protest today. The junta is yet to respond.
But this temple monks protested at Shwe Maw Daw pagoda and thousand of people encouraged them. At about 2 p.m. today about 1,000 monks began a demonstration near Shwedagon pagoda.
The protest started with about 60 monks in Gjei Ton pagoda east of Shewdagon Pagoda with people joining in. Thousands of people offered water and shouted to encourage the monks. The authorities closed all the doors to Shwedagon pagoda.
Following the protest, two monks believed to be from upper Burma were also arrested in front of the Military Southeast Command.
