Battalion 12 of Brigade 11 under the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) announced the indefinite closure of the Ngaroe–Shwegu Road and a major highway linking Shwegu Town, the administrative center of Shwegu Township in Kachin State.

The KIA warned that it would bear no responsibility for any consequences arising from travel on roads it declared closed. It also urged residents in downtown Shwegu to evacuate immediately, adding that it would not be liable for any outcomes resulting from non-compliance.

Coup leader-turned-president Min Aung Hlaing announced plans to invite armed resistance groups to peace talks within the first 100 days of his new administration. However, in contrast, it has continued military operations in Kachin State’s Bhamo, Shwegu, Waingmaw, and Hpakant townships, as well as in the Indawgyi Lake area.

The KIA and allied resistance forces have been carrying out an offensive since December 2024 to capture Bhamo, the second-largest city in Kachin State.

In Kachin State, clashes between the junta and the KIA are currently ongoing not only in Bhamo and Shwegu, but also in Hpakant Township.

On June 5, the Putao People’s Defence Force (Putao PDF) warned drivers against transporting any goods linked to the junta along the Myitkyina–Sumprabum–Putao Road, a major highway in Kachin State.

In addition, the Hopin–Kyaukwar and Hopin–Nyaungpi road sections, located within Battalion 26 territory under KIA Brigade 9, have been closed indefinitely to all motorcycles and vehicles starting May 30.
