Akyab:  Protests in Arakan State continued in two major towns despite the Burmese Army opening fire on protesters in Rangoon and Mandalay, killing at least nine people including monks over the last two days.

In Akyab, the capital of Arakan, 200 monks staged a demonstration on Thursday by marching to the Lawkanada Buddhist temple shouting anti-government slogans, but the army did not intervene to break up the protest.

An eyewitness said the demonstration started at 2 p.m. and concluded peacefully at 4 p.m.

Another large demonstration took place on Thursday in Taungup in Arakan State, with over 10,000 people participating.

People in Taungup gathered first inside Boloon Gwun monastery at 1 p.m. and then marched to another Buddhist monastery, Kan Pai, shouting slogans against the military regime, a woman said.

When the demonstrators arrived at the Kan Pai monastery, the abbot gave two Buddhist flags to a demonstrator to hoist at the forefront of the procession through town.

Later, the demonstrators marched on the main streets in Taungup while continuing to shout anti-government slogans as thousands of townspeople came out on the streets to express support for the protest by waving their hands.

The demonstration ended peacefully at 3:30 p.m.

In Arakan State, the army has not yet fired on demonstrators, and the military has not imposed a curfew in the state as it has in Rangoon and Mandalay.
