Burmese fans gear up for World Cup

With just four days to go before the first whistle, football fans across Burma are gearing up for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

The competition director of the Myanmar Football Federation, Tin Aung, told Mizzima, "All football World Cup enthusiasts in Burma are bustling and excited."

The local Burmese media have helped fuel the public's interest with wide coverage of the competition preparations, Tin Aung said.

While Myawaddy television, one of Burma's two state-owned channels, will cover the cup, many people are reportedly tuning their satellite dishes to get better reception.

According to Flower News, Burmese fans can get the World Cup matches on eight-foot receivers, which, incidentally, have started to sell like hot cakes.

"Because of the World cup 2006, people in [Rangoon] are installing satellite more than before," said Tun Hlaing, the owner of a satellite dish installation company.

Rangoon's big hotels are also trying to cash in on the event, with many planning special deals and lucky draws to lure fans.

This year will mark the second time Germany has hosted the World Cup after it was jointly held in Japan and South Korea in 2002.
