Myanmar Junta troops fight SSPP for two days in Shan State

There were two days of fierce fighting between the Shan State Progressive Party (SSPP/SSA) and junta troops in Moemeik Township, northern Shan State, from 18 till 20 September.

The fighting occurred because about 70 junta soldiers in three columns attacked an SSPP camp, according to the SSPP information department.

According to a local resident, who was near to the fighting, the sound of gunfire was heard until it was night and a military aircraft was also seen in the sky at around 9:00 pm.

He said: "There is an SSPP camp near Wan Ohn Village, in Moemeik Township. It was a little far from us. Both sides exchanged heavy artillery. We heard the sound of gunshots and heavy artillery explosions. We heard that the fighting between the SSPP and Military Council troops had broken out. We saw two military aircrafts fly by at around 9:00 pm.”

Casualty numbers from the fighting are currently unknown.

On 16 September SSPP leaders met with members of the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC) at Pang Hsang, in the Wa self-administered zone in Shan State. It was after these meetings that the junta army attacked the SSPP base in Moemeik Township.
