UEC Chairman declares to dissolve NLD party

The Military Council-appointed union election commission (UEC) will consider deregistering the National League for Democracy (NLD) and its leaders to be charged as treason.

U Thein Soe, the chairman of UEC, made the remarks at a meeting with political parties at the Union Election Commission office in Naypyidaw on May 21 and more than 60 political parties attended the meeting.

"As the voter list will be checked and finalized soon, we must continue what should be done. Therefore, what can we do about the NLD party, which has done such a premeditated act illegally? We have to consider whether we should dissolve the party or whether we should take action against those who committed as traitors”, said U Thein Soe.

In addition, when the newly formed Union Election Commission (UEC) by the Military council scrutinized the voter lists,  they found the mass voter registration without National Registration Card (NRC) and consisting twice or three times on the voter list with the same NRC.

The political parties attending the meeting also have been requested to provide written evidence of election fraud on the experiences regarding the 2020 general election, and he will compile them and use them in reporting to the state, said U Thein Soe.

Although the Mon Unity Party (MUP) and the Women's Party (Mon) attended today's UEC meeting, the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), the Arakan National Party (ANP), the Arakan League for Democracy (ALD), and the Chin National League for Democracy (CNLD) did not attend.

In the 2020 general election, though the NLD won more than 80 percent of the vote nationwide, the Military seized power on February 1, citing electoral fraud.
