Security Forces Kill Protester in Kachin State Capital

Security forces in civilian clothing shot and killed a protester in northern Burma’s Kachin State during a demonstration against the military regime.

The gunmen arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on the protesters around 11 am on Tuesday morning, March 30, said an eyewitness. Around the same time, soldiers surrounded the demonstration in Myitkyina, also shooting at people. They blocked rescue vehicles from providing medical aid to the injured.

Myo Min Thu, 23, died after a bullet penetrated his chest. Security forces shot another person in his arm.

According to other witnesses, police and soldiers torched a home, grocery shop, motorbike repair shop around 1 pm in Quarter 14 of Rampu Ward. They accused protesters of starting the fires, and then indiscriminately fired live rounds at homes in the area.

The same day in the Kachin State capital demonstrations broke out in Tatkon and Sitapru wards.

Soldiers and police killed almost ten people in Kachin State since the coup happened on February 1.
