Authorities Detain Reporters in Kachin State Capital

Security forces beat and arrested two reporters covering a protest in Myitkyina, Kachin State, according to an eyewitness.

Authorities arrested Ma Chan Bu, with The 74 Media and Ko La Raw, with Kachin Wave, on March 29. Both media outlets are based in the Kachin State capital.

Soldiers and police fired live rounds, rubber bullets and teargas at participants in Aye Zayti Ward on Monday resulting in several injuries during the crackdown.

In February, there were six journalists arrested in Myitkyina. They were freed after the Kachin Peace-talk Creation Group negotiated with authorities for their release.
