House of Nationalities (upper house) Immigration, domestic/immigrant domestic workers affairs committee chairman Kyaw Htwe said that they were trying to enact the Domestic/Immigrant Domestic Workers Law in 2020.

The committee has already drafted the bill and it has reportedly reached the ministry for deliberations.

Kyaw Htwe said the objective of drafting the bill was to get full labour rights for domestic workers and enabling their employers to assign duties to their employees safely with trust.

Thet Thet Aung from ‘Future Rays Focal Point’ said, “Domestic workers do not enjoy labour rights granted in 1951 Minimum Wages Act. The characteristic of their work is unique and specific from other work but domestic workers are demanding a specific law for them.”

Chairman Kyaw Htwe said that they were working to submit the bill to parliament within the first half of next year.
