The chair of the Karenni (Kayah) State’s parliamentary monitoring committee on government project implementation has criticized the state administration for failing to keep its promises.

The committee recently released its three-year report, highlighting how many projects have been stalled, including work on public grounds where the Karenni State Day celebrations take place. It has carried out 74 of its approved projects in total, and 71 remain.

“We cannot push them to work. They only attended one out of three parliamentary meetings. They should not be like this. The people have elected them for the government and the parliament,” chairperson Aung Naing Oo told Kantarawaddy Times.

Multiple parliamentary committees are assigned to observe the situations on the ground in the state and then report their findings to respective ministries, as well as the legislature.

However, according to Aung Naing Oo, many of these reports are lost before reaching those in charge of the Karenni State government.

“Some letters disappear before they reach the hands of the chief minister. Some letters for parliament are also kept in the corner of a cabinet. It’s not good,” he said.

Thae Reh, a parliamentarian from Hpruso Constituency 1, said that state government should implement the projects that it is able to, and transfer responsibility for others to the Unon government.

“They have delayed implementing projects… Even though everything has to go through the Union government, in my opinion, the Union government is ruling the country through the state government. So the state government can do something,” Thae Reh told Kantarawaddy Times.
