Teacher arrested for suspected links with Arakan Army

A primary school teacher from Buthidaug, 80 miles north of Arakanese capital city of Sittwe, was arrested suspecting his links with Arakan Army. Nay Zaw Lin was picked up by the security

forces on 5 July, informed an authorized person from Buthidaug township education department office.

“Nay Zaw Lin was arrested by Myanmar Army officials when he was going to Kyar Nyo Byint school from Thet Yet Byint village. The 551 battalion stopped him near Thet Yet Bying bridge at around 9 am and then arrested. He is now under the army custody,” said U Thein Tun Win from Buthidaug township education department office.

According to the department sources Nay Zaw Lin  was serving at Kyar Nyo Byint primary school for over three years.

U Thein Tun Win also added that he went to meet some concerned security officers yesterday and came to know that Nay Zaw Lin allegedly maintained links with the rebels through his cell phone.

However the officers assured that the teacher would be released soon after the process of interrogation completed.

It is for the first time that security forces have arrested a government teacher suspecting links with the rebels. However,  many locals including few village administrators were earlier detained

(also arrested) by the forces with the suspicion of maintaining connections with Arakan Army rebels
