Tornado rips through southern Arakan State

Ramma Gyun village in Gwa Township, southern Arakan State, was hit by a tornado yesterday morning, destroying at least 14 houses, according to local sources.

Three of them, which were built from of bamboo and had thatched roofs, were completely smashed, said U Thu Kha, administrator of Ramma Gyun village.

“Roofs were ripped off; the tornado happened suddenly, we cannot guess when it will happen,” he said.

No injuries have been reported. People whose houses were destroyed are taking shelter in their relatives’ homes now.

“Some affected families are repairing their houses while their family members are taking shelter in their relatives’ home,” U Thu Kha said.

The Myanmar Red Cross Society is now constructing temporary buildings for affected families.
