Press Council Chairman Ohn Kyaing said that the council had responsibility to work for journalists who were charged, detained and imprisoned for their news reporting.

“The drastic change is in declining violence against reporters, but our journalists are now being charged with serious cases under old laws. It is more resented than violence. These are difficulties we are facing now. Our Press Council has responsibility to settle these issues,” he said.

U Ohn Kyaing added that they were now trying to resolve these issues by meeting with responsible officials concerned.

But Press Council Joint Secretary (1) Myint Kyaw said that Press Council was not yet in a position to give full legal protection to fellow journalists and they did not have full authority to do so.
