Two men have gone missing in a landslide in Mawmau Kawng village in Hpakant Township on Friday, according to local sources.

The landslide occurred at around 4:00 p.m.—another two people were reportedly injured.

"The landslide happened at the jade mining block of the Jade Land Company. The bodies [of the missing people] have still not been found,” a local told KNG, adding that a rescue team and the respective authorities are still searching for the men.

The victims are 24-year-old Makha Awng Latt, who lived in the Mai Ner IDP camp, and Mayaw Brang Tawng, age 47, who lived in Myitkyina’s Tatkon ward.

The Kachin State government ordered all mining companies to stop digging for jade in Hpakant Township months ago, because of the onset of the rainy season.

Deadly landslides are frequent in Hpakant and claim multiple lives annually.
