The KNU’s temporary absence from peace meetings makes discomfort for EAOs, Mon says

The Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) have faced uneasiness due to Karen National Union (KNU)’s temporary withdrawal from the formal peace talks, according to Nai Aung Ma-ngay who is a member of central executive committee of New Mon State Party (NMSP).

“KNU’s temporary withdrawal is not good for EAOs’ group as a whole. We must go together. We must step forward together. We must draw back together. Talk together, discuss together. As KNU temporarily withdrew from peace talk, We will hold CEC meeting in order to review this matter,” Nai Aung Ma-ngay told KIC on 16 November.

He also continued that Ethnic Armed Organizations have different views concerning the territorial confusion and it’s difficult to say how much the matter will be influenced upon the NMSP which is one of the signatories to the NCA.  “Due to KNU’s temporary withdrawal, there would be lots of hindrances in the ongoing peace process. Mon and Karen are more influential groups in the southern part of the country. If Mon go ahead while the Karen is resting, it would not be appropriate. There might not be challenging between the two but it could become impact on the Panglong peace conference,” Nai Min Min New, a political analyst, made a comment  on 17 November.

The Karen National Union (KNU) held its Central Standing Committee’s emergency meeting and the 6th Karen National Union Congress held on 6 November in Lewah (Lawkhila) in Hpaan, Karen State. After the Central Standing Committee’s emergency meeting, the KNU has released a statement on 10 November that mentioned its decision to withdraw temporarily from the official peace process and it also decided to find solution through private peace talks.
