An embankment dam burst in Kala Bar Taung Village of Taung Yin Group under Kyaukpyu Township, Rakhine State at around 11 am on August 13.

The Kyaukpyu District Administrator confirmed that the embankment dam burst along with the tide and over 200 people have been evacuated to a monastery.

“Water has receded at the moment, but it can rise with the tide in the evening so we've asked the people to remain at the monastery. We are arranging to send meal packs in the evening,” said the district administrator.

The embankment dam has been built with earth and Kala Bar Taung Village is home to around 100 households and local residents are worried over the breach in the embankment dam.

“High tide caused the embankment to burst since it’s past the new moon day of Waso. The breached area of the embankment dam is around 40 feet wide,” an official from Kyaukpyu Township Police Station told Narinjara News.

He said they are still investigating the situation of damaged homes and whether anyone has been injured so he cannot talk about them yet.

District-level and township-level officials have been carrying out relief work for the local residents.
