The Pyithu Hluttaw on Monday (June 11) rejected a proposal by MP U Sai Kyaw Moe from Shan State’s Mong Pan constituency to establish an independent inquiry commission for the Rakhine State with only local experts.
In his proposal, U Sai Kyaw Moe urged the government to reconsider its decision to include a foreign expert in its three-member independent inquiry commission for the Rakhine State by respecting the country’s sovereignty and dignity of the citizens.
He submitted the proposal on June 6 and the hluttaw agreed to discuss it after it was supported by U Maung Myint from Mingin constituency.
U Oo Hla Saw, U Ba Shein, U Aung Kyaw Zan, Daw Khin Saw Wai, and U Aung Thaung Shwe from the Arakan National Party supported the proposal together with six military MPs and three MPs from the Union Solidarity and Development Party during the discussion on June 11, according to Pyithu Hluttaw MP U Pe Than from Myebon constituency.
U Pe Than said six MPs from the National League for Democracy opposed the proposal and Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin from the Ministry of State Counsellor’s Office also said the proposal should not be approved by the hluttaw.
The proposal was rejected after 138 voted in favor, 251 against, and three sustained among 399 eligible voters.
