Two men charged with illegal border entry after detained as suspects in Sittwe bomb blasts

Two men who have been charged with illegal border entry will make a court appearance on May 8 after they were arrested as suspects in connection with Sittwe bomb blasts that went off on February 24.

“My father U Than Shwe and Maung Myint Kyi were arrested by the police after the bomb blasts went off. Now, they have been charged with illegal border entry [under the Immigration Act] 13 (1). They will make another court appearance on the coming May 8,” Ma Khine Hnin Wai, daughter of U Than Shwe, told Narinjara News.

The police filed charges against U Than Shwe and Maung Myint Kyi to the Sittwe Township Court under Section 13 (1) of the Immigration Act on March 29 and they made their court appearance on May 2.

The police detained nine Sittwe residents after three handmade bombs went off in Sittwe on February 24. Five men were released and two men have been charged under the Counter-Terrorism Law while two men have been charged with illegal border entry.

The two men who have been charged under the Counter-Terrorism Law are U Maung Aye Win and U Maung Oo Myint and the police have filed three charges against them to the Sittwe Township Court on April 24.

These two men have been charged under the Penal Code Section 50 (a)/ (i) (case no 29/2018), Penal Code Section 50 (i) (case no 30/2018), and Penal Code Section 50 (i) (case no 31/2018) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.

Sittwe Myoma Police Station released U Naing Soe, U Maung Myint Shwe, U Shwe Tun Aung, and U Tin Myint Shwe on bail on March 26 and U Maung Thein Oo on bail on March 27.

“We’ve hired a lawyer, but we are very sad to hear that it’s not easy for them to become released. The families are worried. I think they shouldn’t have been charged with other act if they are not connected to the bomb blasts. They should be released,” said Ma Khine Hnin Wai.
