A Burmese government Peace Commission delegation met with the Delegation for Political Negotiation (DPN), which represents members of the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), a coalition of ethnic armed organisations (EAOs) on 25 September.
At the meeting, held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand the Peace Commission delegation, led by its advisory committee leader, U Aung Kyi and the DPN delegation, led by Khu Oo Reh, discussed the eight point proposal submitted to the Burmese government by the UNFC.
None of the EAOs who are members of the UNFC have yet signed the nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA) that was signed by the government in October 2015.
Khu Oo Reh said to Network Media: “We will continue to negotiate the eight points previously submitted. We have thoroughly discussed these eight points, but we have not yet reached a solution. We are only holding this meeting to discuss the resettlement issue and confirm [what we have already discussed]. We will continue the negotiations [at another time].”
Points within the eight-point proposal cover the rules and regulations for the ceasefire, the military code of conduct for the ceasefire, the official announcement of the NCA by the Burma Army and the UNFC and drafting a constitution based on the outcome of the 21st Century Panglong Conference.
Amongst those attending the meeting were U Aung Kyi, U Aung Soe, Dr Min Zaw Oo, U Kyaw Thura, and U Tin Tun Aung from the Peace Commission. The DPN delegation included representatives from the seven EAOs who make up the membership of the UNFC.
