Police Receive Election Security Training in Taunggyi

S.H.A.N. police officers received election security training at the state police office in Taunggyi Town, Shan State on 23 February.

Since there are many political parties in Shan State they could face challenges such as threats, coercion as well as conflict with other parties during the election campaign, said Police Colonel Tun Naing deputy state police commissioner, during the training.

He said: “Armed groups can also cause disturbances so we have to consider and include these points.”

U Tin Aye, the chairman of the Taunggyi District Election Commission said: “The main thing is the security of the people during the election period, it [the election] should not be about threatening and intimidating people. So, if all related security forces, civil society organisations (CSOs), political parties and the media cooperate together there will be less unfairness in the elections.”

He explained that anyone who breaks the election security rules can be punished under the election law and sentenced to three years in prison and a fine. If a physical attack takes place the police will take action and prosecute the offenders under existing laws.

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) also gave a lecture about election security to the deputy state and regional police commissioners at a workshop on 5 February.
