The Mon State Government will implement a local business stimulus project in the forthcoming 2017-2018 fiscal year in the respective townships of Kyaikhto, Mudon, Chaungzone and Moulmein, according to the Mon State’s Hotel and Tourism Directorate Department.

The Ministry of Hotel and Tourism and the Asia Development Bank (ADB) have agreed to cooperate to implement the project, while respective technical assistance and methods will also be provided for the improvement of quality local handicrafts and food products.

“To launch the projects in those four townships, we conducted fieldwork during 2015. The ADB has provided 3 million USD for the projects. We have already started constructing office buildings and other buildings in those respective four townships and we will start implementing the projects in this upcoming fiscal year,” said U Hauk Kyin Mone, Deputy Director of Mon State Hotel and Tourism Directorate Department.

U Hauk Kyin Mone added that six other townships would establish similar projects when there are financial supports available.

“Foreign visitors are interested in the products from Chaungzone Townships, including mini blackboards, smoking pipes, and bamboo hats. If we improve these products with international technology, we can then sell the products worldwide,” said Nai Tin, an employer of a bamboo hat business in Chaungzone Township.

The Ministry of Hotel and Tourism and ADB already signed an agreement on May 17, 2016, for the implementation of the local business stimulus project, a part of tourism business development in the state.
