Lanterns will be released and prayers offered for the victims of human rights abuses around the world in Ye town, southern Mon State on International Human Rights Day, 10 December.

The event is a collaboration between Mon youth and civil society organisations and will take place in Thiri Nandar Ward, Ye Township from 5pm to 11pm said the event’s organising committee.

Nai Soe Thein, who heads the organising committee said: “We will organise a prayer event for the victims of human rights abuses as we empathize with their cases. We will also release lanterns. Then we will organise discussions on human rights, women’s rights and children’s rights on stage.”

He said that topics to be discussed at the event will include projects to improve human rights in the region, reports on how to improve the lives of women and children, the state of human rights in Burma and current Burmese case studies. There will also be a question and answer session and readings of human rights documents.

According to the organising committee, it is necessary for everyone to respect human rights. The objectives of the event are to have locals understand the Declaration of International Human Rights.

In order to educate children on human rights, games and [drama] play sessions will be organised.
