U Htin Kyaw of the National League for Democracy (NLD) was elected to be President of the Republic of the Union Union of Myanmar during a Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (lower house of parliament) session on 15 March

The military presidential nominee, U Myint Swe was elected as Vice President (1) and U Henry Van Thio, a Chin National and NLD Member of Parliament, was elected as Vice-President (2) in the same parliamentary session vote.

Out of 562 members of parliament that attended the session and voted for the president 360 voted for U Myint Swe, 213 voted for U Myint Swe and 79 voted for U Henry Van Thio.

The new president and vice presidents will take up their posts on 30 March 2016.

U Henry Van Thio will be the first Chin national to serve as Vice President.
