Over 800 health assistants that have completed their training are unable to secure government positions, said U Sein Tun, a Sittwe Township Health Assistant.

Maung Naing Zaw Moe from Shwebo Township, who works for a non-government organization in Mrauk U Township, said even though he completed his training four years ago he still can’t get a government job.

“There are many people who still aren’t employed even though they completed their training six years ago,” he said, adding that there are over 600 new people attending the training course.

Health assistants in Arakan State recently gathered in capital Sittwe to voice their concerns. A statewide blue ribbon campaign was launched to protest against the government employing health workers that haven’t attended the training course. The protesters also called for the immediate employment of the unemployed 800 health assistants that have already attended training, or allow the unemployed-health assistants to take university courses to further their training.
