A severe outbreak of cholera and acute diarrhea is spreading across Myanmar's commercial capital, Yangon, resulting in at least one death and more than 260 recorded cases, according to statements from the military junta's regional government.

Since August 9, patients suffering severe diarrheal illnesses have been admitted to hospitals across at least nine townships, including Latha, Lanmadaw, Pabedan, and Kyauktada.

Official data released by the regional government indicates that 260 cases were recorded through August 13, with 98 patients requiring hospitalization. An elderly man died from complications on August 13.

Residents report that hospital admission rates remain high as daily infections continue to climb. Specialized treatment wards have been established across 65 healthcare facilities in the region, including Yangon General Hospital, to manage the influx of patients.

Residents attribute the sudden spike in cases to recent localized flooding in urban townships alongside poor municipal water quality.

"The outbreak is heavily linked to water quality, particularly in areas hit by recent floods," a resident explained. "The municipal water supply is unhygienic, which exacerbates the spread. Elderly people and those with weakened immune systems face the highest risk."

In an attempt to contain the spread, local authorities ordered the temporary closure of street food stalls across heavily affected townships on August 13. Reopening will depend on further health assessments.

Health authorities have also advised the public to avoid unhygienic water, ice, and street food, while emphasizing proper sanitation and the use of fly-proof toilets.
