An Indian cargo ship carrying materials for the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTC) has docked at Sittwe Port in Rakhine State, the Indian Embassy in Myanmar announced on May 16, 2026.
The vessel, MV Taw Win Thiri, delivered 400 tonnes of general cargo.
Its arrival marks the 300th vessel to dock at the facility, signaling a major milestone for the India-funded infrastructure initiative.
Developed with financial assistance from the Government of India, Sittwe Port aims to boost regional connectivity and streamline the flow of humanitarian goods.
The $484 million Kaladan project is designed to connect India’s eastern seaports to its landlocked northeastern states via the Bay of Bengal, effectively bypassing the narrow Siliguri Corridor.
While the port and waterway components of the project are now complete, the construction of the final highway link faces ongoing delays. Project organizers target a full completion date in 2027 to establish the strategic trade route.
However, political analysts note that the project's ultimate success heavily relies on local dynamics. Because the Arakan Army (AA) currently controls most territories along the Kaladan River Project route, continued construction and future operations will depend significantly on cooperation with the group.
