The Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dr Abdullah Zafer bin Abiyah, has called for the expedited issuance of Bangladeshi passports for approximately 69,000 Rohingyas currently residing in Saudi Arabia, according to an official statement from the Home Ministry.
The appeal was made during a courtesy meeting with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Secretariat in Dhaka on April 20.
In response, the home minister confirmed that around 22,000 Rohingyas have already been issued Bangladeshi passports following verification of necessary documentation and supporting evidence. He noted that the government has deployed a dedicated team to Saudi Arabia to accelerate the remaining process.
Emphasizing accountability, Salahuddin Ahmed stated that any form of corruption or irregularity in passport issuance would be dealt with strictly.
The meeting also covered a range of bilateral issues, including law enforcement cooperation, security concerns, and the ongoing process of passport issuance for Rohingyas living in Saudi Arabia. Discussions further extended to potential Saudi investments in Bangladesh, particularly in the tourism and energy sectors.
Highlighting economic prospects, the minister underscored opportunities for enhanced collaboration in manpower export, tourism development, and energy investments, urging stronger engagement between the two countries.
He further stated that individuals identified as Myanmar nationals who possess valid Bangladeshi documentation or meet the required legal criteria may be considered for passport issuance. He also stressed the need to obtain a comprehensive list from Saudi authorities for re-verification.
During the meeting, Ambassador Dr Abdullah Zafer bin Abiyah invited a Bangladeshi delegation, led by the home minister, to visit Saudi Arabia. Salahuddin Ahmed welcomed the invitation, indicating that such a visit could take place in the first half of July.
Senior officials from the Home Ministry were also present at the meeting.
