A landslide at a rare-earth mining site between Chipwi and Pang War towns in Chipwi Township, Kachin State killed one mine worker.
The tragedy struck around 6:30 p.m. on April 18 at a mining site near Lupyi Village, close to Pang War.
“A landslide occurred at a rare-earth mining site near the Chipwi–Pang War Road. Excessive pumping of water is thought to have contributed to the collapse. One mine worker died,” a mine worker from the area told KNG.
No other people were injured in the landslide. The road section next to the landslide site has been closed due to falling mud.
“It appears that excessive water was used for mining. The road is now blocked by a landslide, and mud is still slowly sliding down. Backhoes are on standby to clear the mud,” the source added.
Cars and motorbikes cannot pass because huge chunks of mud are blocking the road.
Deadly landslides at mining sites are common in Pang War, but this is the first reported incident in 2026.
