Khaing Lu Hla (Roma Mray) — Two individuals, including a teenager, have suffered severe injuries and limb loss following landmine explosions along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Rakhine State over the last four days.
The most recent incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, at approximately 1:00 PM near the Naf River in the Palongkhali border area of Ukhiya. Abdul Hakim, a teenage Rohingya refugee, was fishing when he triggered a mine while crossing toward the Myanmar side of the river.
Lt. Col. Md. Jahirul Islam, commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 64th Battalion, confirmed the blast.
The explosion severed Hakim’s right ankle and caused critical injuries to his body.
Locals rescued him and transported him to the MSF Hospital in Kutupalong; however, as his condition worsened, he was transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for advanced care.
A similar incident took place on Thursday, March 26, near the "Zero Line" of the Naf River. Mohammad Shahidul, 25, a resident of Block F-5 at Refugee Camp No. 16, was struck by a blast at approximately 12:45 PM.
Lt. Col. Islam confirmed that Shahidul also lost his right ankle in the explosion.
Like Hakim, he was initially treated at the MSF facility before being moved to the district hospital in Cox’s Bazar due to the severity of his injuries.
These back-to-back explosions have sparked significant panic among local residents and refugees living in the border settlements, as the presence of unexploded ordnance continues to pose a lethal threat in the region.
