A junta airstrike in Mrauk-U, the former capital of the Arakan Kingdom in Rakhine State, struck the town’s People’s Hospital, killing more than 30 people.

On December 10, International Human Rights Day, a junta fighter jet bombed the hospital at around 9:00 pm.

The death toll, initially reported as 10, has now risen to 33, while the number of injured has climbed to more than 70.

The fatalities included both patients and caregivers, 16 men and 17 women, and town residents worry the number could continue to increase.

“The confirmed death toll is now 33, 16 men and 17 women, and it may rise further, as dozens of the injured are in critical condition,” said a Mrauk-U resident.

Among the injured, 27 people, 18 men and 9 women, were in serious condition, while another 49 suffered moderate or minor injuries.

The junta’s bombing destroyed the main hall, operating theater, orthopedic ward, and staff quarters of Mrauk-U People’s Hospital, and also damaged nearby homes.

Since the coup, the junta has targeted residential areas, schools, and healthcare facilities across both resistance-controlled and resistance-strong areas.

According to the Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office (HDCO), the humanitarian arm of the Arakan Army (AA) and its political wing, the United League of Arakan (ULA), junta attacks and other forms of aggression between early 2023 and September 2025 have killed 970 civilians and injured 2,054 in Arakan State. Of these, airstrikes alone accounted for 443 deaths and 1,015 injuries.

The AA has controlled Mrauk-U since February 8, 2024.
