A junta-aligned Facebook account spread false information by using old photos to claim that the military had seized a large cache of weapons allegedly sent by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) to the Sagaing Region.

The propaganda account ‘The Return of Ba Gyi Aung’ circulated the claim, which, as of November 10, had garnered 716 reactions, 25 comments, and 86 shares.

Shan Herald, a member of the Myanmar Fact-checking Network (MFCN), verified the content circulating on social media and confirmed it was fake news using on old photos.

Reverse image searches revealed that the photos were old, dating back to 2019, prior to the coup.

The Facebook page used old documentary photos from November 22, 2019, showing the Myanmar military uncovering three weapons caches hidden by the TNLA near Homein Village in Namhsan Township, northern Shan State, to fabricate a false narrative.

On November 23, 2019, the Myanmar military announced the seizure of a large cache of TNLA weapons.
