A Myanmar junta airstrike on a village in Sagaing Region killed a woman and injured 15 others, including children, local residents said.

The strike occurred at around 11:20 am on 22 September, when a jet fighter dropped two bombs on Kyi Su village in southwest Kanbalu Township. The bombs hit the village monastery and school, where many displaced people had taken shelter.

“There was no fighting. They bombed the monastery and school where most displaced people were staying,” said a member of the People’s Defence Comrade group, who is also a local resident.

The deceased victim was a woman in her 60s. The wounded are receiving medical treatment, according to residents.

Kyi Su, home to around 800 households of Buddhists and Muslims, lies at the junction of Kanbalu, Ye-U, and Khin-U townships. Many residents have fled to towns or forests, while others are living in makeshift shelters.

“Most of the displaced people came from other villages. Local residents are living in temporary huts. Some no longer dare to stay in the village. Many have moved to towns or are hiding in the forest,” one villager said.

Kyi Su was previously raided by junta troops in July 2022, when houses, monasteries, and mosques were burned and 15 residents were killed in a mass execution, according to locals.
