Death toll in junta airstrike on two boarding schools rises to 22 in Kyauktaw

The death toll has risen to 22 after the Myanmar Air Force conducted an airstrike on two private boarding high schools, Pyinyar Pan Kin and Amyin Thit, in Thayet Ta Pin village, Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State. The village is located near the ancient Mahamuni image shrine.

Two local reporters, Naung Min Thu and Saw Shin May of Narinjara News, who went to cover the story, stated that as of 2 p.m. today, September 12, there were 19 students from Pyinyar Pan Kin Private High School and three from Amyin Thit Private High School among the dead, for a total of 22.

According to a list Narinjara received, the students who died from Pyinyar Pan Kin Private High School were in Grade 11 and aged between 14 and 17. They included Maung Htun Lin Nyein, Maung Toe Wai Yan, Maung Khaing Min Ko, Maung Htun Lin Hein, Myint Myat Soe, Kaung Myat Hlaing, Phyo Min Wai, Khaing Myo Htoo, and Aung Lin from Manaw Thiri Village, Pauktaw Township, along with 10 others.

The names of the other 10 students who died are not yet known. The list of dead and injured students is mixed up, and the remaining names will be announced soon.

Similarly, the three students who died at Amyin Thit Private Boarding High School were Maung Myo Aung (15), a Grade 10 student; Maung Nay Min Khant (14), a Grade 8 student; and another student whose name has not been released.

The students who died in the airstrike were from rural villages in Mrauk U, Pauktaw, Maungdaw, and Kyauktaw townships.

The junta air force conducted the airstrike at approximately 1:05 a.m. on September 12, 2025, dropping two 500-pound bombs on Thayet Ta Pin village, three miles east of Kyauktaw. The bombs struck the front of Pyinyar Pan Kin Private High School and Amyin Thit Private Boarding High School.

Since the civil war restarted in Arakan State on November 13, 2023, all public schools in areas controlled by the Arakan Army (AA) have been forced to close. The AA has occupied 15 townships, including Paletwa Township in southern Chin State.

As a result, many parents in Arakan State have sent their children to private schools for continued education.

The airstrike, which occurred around midnight, also injured more than 20 civilians, including students, some of whom are in critical condition and likely to die.

The bomb hit the student dormitory of Pyinyar Pan Kin Private School and exploded, killing most of the students inside and completely destroying the dormitory and classrooms.

The bombing also destroyed both private schools and six houses and partially damaged several other houses. A car and a motorcycle were also damaged.
