The Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG) announced on September 8 that 35 civilians were killed in Karenni State during the month of August as a result of attacks carried out by the military junta.
According to KnHRG, 33 civilians were killed in airstrikes, one by artillery shelling, and another was shot dead, bringing the total civilian death toll to 35.
Among the victims were three children, eight women, 18 men, and six individuals whose identities have not yet been confirmed. Most of the fatalities were attributed to airstrikes, particularly in the Mawchi area of Hpasawng Township, where many civilians were reportedly killed or injured.
KnHRG reported that throughout August 2025, the military committed 25 human rights violations across several townships, including Loikaw, Dee Maw Hso, Bawlakhe, Pruso, and Pekon. These violations consisted of nine airstrikes, 13 artillery shellings, one landmine incident, one case of arbitrary arrest, and one civilian killed by gunfire.
Local residents stated that since renewed fighting escalated along the Shan–Karenni border in November 2024, the military junta has increasingly relied on airstrikes targeting civilian areas in Karenni State.
KnHRG further reported that the State Administration Council (SAC) has launched ongoing military offensives aimed at securing township control ahead of elections, forcing civilians into repeated displacement. Between July and August alone, an estimated 200,000 people were newly displaced, creating an urgent need for food, shelter, and other humanitarian assistance.
KnHRG further noted that ongoing airstrikes, arrests, and other junta-led attacks have continued to drive up the number of internally displaced persons across Karenni State. The group appealed to the international community to urgently coordinate humanitarian aid, including cross-border assistance, to address the escalating crisis.
