Junta airstrikes hit two resistance checkpoints on 7 June 2025 in National Unity Government (NUG)-controlled areas of Tigyaing Township, in northern Sagaing Region.
The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and people’s defence forces (PDF) under the NUG, control all of Tigyaing Township except for the townships administrative centre, Tigyaing Town.
Talking of the two recent airstrikes, a local living in the resistance controlled areas of Tigyaing Township said: “The junta bombed two spots, both were NUG checkpoint locations. One was at Paukkone Village, and the other was close to Kyu Hill. Even though the junta carried out airstrikes there, nothing really followed afterward, no ground operations or anything significant.”
On 7 June, in the early hours of the morning before it was light, junta aircraft bombed the resistance checkpoint at Paukkone Village in Tigyaing Township. Local media outlets reported one woman was killed and another woman and a man were seriously injured in the airstrike.
Later that same day, 7 June, at around 9:00 pm a junta aircraft dropped another bomb on a resistance checkpoint between Marathein Village and Kyu Hill, also in Tigyaing Township. Casualty numbers from that incident are currently unknown as it is hard to get information from Tigyaing Township as the junta has cut internet and phone lines to all of the township except Tingyaing Town for the past three years.
In mid-May 2025 junta aircraft bombed the Myat Noe Thu lumber company's yard near Ngapichaung Village in Tigyaing Township for four straight days. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
After they took control of the rest of Tigyaing Township, KIA and PDF forces launched an offensive to take Tigyaing Town on 8 November 2023. But, the offensive stalled and nearly a year later, in September 2024, the defence forces gave up on trying to take Tigyaing Town.
Currently, Tigyaing Town remains in junta hands. Since the fighting to take the town died down residents of the town have faced food shortages and other crises that have forced many of them to flee the town.
