NUG Criticises Junta Ceasefire

The National Unity Government (NUG) criticised the junta's unilateral ceasefire announcement saying it lacks the ethical principles and agreements essential to a genuine truce and instead includes conditions that can be easily violated.

The comments were relayed by NUG spokesperson, U Nay Phone Latt at a 13 May 2025 NUG press briefing addressed to the Myanmar people and the international community.

He said: “It’s important to note that the truce announced by the junta only includes conditions that are easy to break. A real truce should be built on ethical principles and mutual agreements, and there needs to be international monitoring to make sure those terms are actually followed. There also has to be clear, pre-agreed steps in place for dealing with any side that breaks the truce.”

He added that the junta ceasefire announcement was completely hypocritical and just made to get the goodwill of the international community. The junta is not, in reality, following the ceasefire and has, instead, increased its attacks on civilian targets, including religious buildings, schools, and hospitals since the ceasefire supposedly came into effect.

He said: “The terrorist junta is still carrying out airstrikes, shelling villages, and setting them on fire every single day. At the same time, it’s extending the so-called truce just to create a false impression of goodwill in front of the international community.”

He also warned other countries to not pressure armed groups to sign a ceasefire saying: “If a country tries to pressure armed groups close to it into accepting a ceasefire, it won’t help in the long run. Instead, it will just make things more complicated and deepen the divisions and tensions between ethnic forces.”
