The 28 March 2025 earthquake with its epicentre under Sagaing Town had been followed by 56 aftershocks as of the morning of 2 April, according to the junta’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) under the Ministry of Transportation and Communication.

It reported that there were 12 aftershocks on the day of the earthquake, 28 March. This was followed by 11 aftershocks on 29 March, 10 on 30 March, 13 on 31 March, seven on 1 April and three on the morning of 2 April.

On the evening of 1 April a magnitude 5 aftershock struck near Mandalay City which had already been severely impacted by the earthquake on 28 March. The aftershock caused some already damaged buildings to collapse and resulted in several injuries.

A resident of Mandalay City said to the Voice of Shan-Ni: “Aftershocks have been rumbling every day since the earthquake. Some days, we've had as many as three strong tremors in just one day. There have even been aftershocks in the middle of the night.”

Other aftershocks felt on 2 April, according to the DMH, include one of magnitude 3.1, that had a shallow epicentre with a depth of about 4 km, located about three miles northeast of Yedashe Town in Taungoo District, Bago Region, where it could be clearly felt.

Later that morning, at around 10:17 am on 2 April, a magnitude 3.9 aftershock struck southwest of Tigyaing Town in Katha District, Sagaing Region.

Many residents of Mandalay City have been panicked by the aftershocks and no longer dare stay in their homes. Instead they have been living in temporary tents outside their homes, on roadsides, and in open fields.
