University students demand allowance for IDP students

University students from Arakan State have demanded authorities to provide a financial stipend for students from IDP camps on 2 September headed by the Students’ Union of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Thandwe town.

Students’ Unions from Sittwe University, Technological University, University of Computer Studies and Taungup Degree College also demonstrated on 26 August to provide financial aid for students who have been taking shelter in IDP camps due to armed conflicts in the region.

“We’re pressing authorities to deal with issues of IDP students and to fulfill the needs of our universities,” said Ko Ye Tun Naing, chair of the Students’ Union of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Thandwe town.

Students from universities and colleges in Arakan State have demanded authorities to increase the budget allocation for education, to stop recent wrongful arrests and torture of people including students, to allow local and foreign aid for IDPs and to stop the information blackout in Arakan and Chin States.

The government has currently been providing education access to IDP students, but refugee students are facing challenges and requirements. Some students are being educated by social aid groups and monasteries.
