UEC disbands UDP

Union Election Commission (UEC) announced on October 17 that the United Democratic Party (UDP) had been removed from the list of registered parties and dissolved the party, according to a decision arrived at by the coordination meeting of the UEC held on October 17.

The police arrested U Kyaw Myint (aka) Michael Kyaw Myint Hua Hu, chair of the UDP on 29 September for the prison escape. He has been charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code.

According to the press conference by the Office of the President, the arrested UDP Chair illegally received USD 12 million from China in 2015.

The UDP has the second largest number of candidates across the country after the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD). The party prepared to compete in 1,131 constituencies.

The candidates from the UDP lost their rights to be elected as they failed to comply with the provision of Section 10, Sub-Section (h) of the Parliamentary Election Law.

The UEC ordered the relevant states and regions, Union Territory, Self-Administered Division/Zones and Sub-commissions of the district election to remove the names of the UDP’s candidates from the lists in accordance with the Sub-section (c) and (d) of Section 36 of the Parliamentary Election Acts.
