Tatmadaw Launches Airstrikes On KIA in Kachin State

The Burma Army launched an airstrike on a Kachin Independence Army (KIA) position in what appears to be a retaliatory attack after the ethnic armed organization attacked the military the same day.

KIA troops attacked the 21-mile checkpoint near Ma Yang village, Myitkyina Township, at 5 am June 30. According to locals, a police officer died instantly.

Another man died later from a gunshot wound and there was a person shot in his thigh. “We heard heavy weapons and rifles fired during the 45-minute attack,” said a local who didn't want their name used.

Another villager, who requested anonymity, told KNG that a Burma Army combat chopper attacked KIA Battalion 11 near Kasung village, west of Kachin State capital Myitkyina, around 1 pm.

The source heard there were no Kachin soldiers injured or killed during the attack.

One week ago, KIA attacked a checkpoint on Bala Min Htin Bridge connecting Myitkyina with Waingmaw. The same evening, Burma Army shelled KIA positions in Laiza, Mai Ja Yang, Hpakant, Dawt Hpong Yang, Myo Thit and Konlaw.
