Soldier to face disciplinary action for insulting woman’s modesty

Khin Tharaphy Oo — A soldier who allegedly insulted a woman’s modesty on the afternoon of April 6 in Arakan State’s Kyauktaw Township will face military legal action, the Office of the Commander-in-Chief said on April 7.

The incident occurred outside a military base in Kyauktaw Township where Tatmadaw personnel were conducting security checks on vehicles passing through the area. An account of an exchange between the offending soldier and a driver was later uploaded to social media, where it was apparently brought to the military brass’s attention, prompting disciplinary action.

Dr. Saw Min Aung posted on his Facebook page that a private at the checking gate put his hand on the sill of the driver side window and made a pair of sexually suggestive remarks about the vehicle’s passenger, Dr. Saw Min Aung’s wife.

Private Aung Kyaw Thein, who was on security duty at the checkpoint, was found to have directed the offensive words at the female passenger and the Tatmadaw is moving forward with legal action in line with military regulations, said the statement from the Tatmadaw chief’s office.

In his post, Dr. Saw Min Aung requested that legal action be taken against the soldier who uttered the insulting words about his wife. Speaking to DMG on April 7, he said: “I do not want to hear of such a case again.”
