The party beat out the SNDP and NLD in the by-election.
The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) party claimed a victory for a Lower House seat in Shan State’s Laikha Township by-election on Saturday.
They beat out the Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP) and the National League for Democracy (NLD), which were also competing for the seat.
The SNLD’s Sai Okker—also known as Sai Kawng Kham—earned 8,575 votes, while the SNDP’s candidate Sai Shwe Seng got 1,653 votes, and the NLD contender—Sai Aung Tun Lay—received 1,023.
“The election commission will finalize the election result. They already counted the votes but they have to double-check the result. I thank all the voters,” MP-elect Sai Okker told SHAN.
Just over 12,000 of Laikha’s nearly 40,000 eligible voters turned out for the November 3 by-election. Around 54% of the voting population participated in the 2015 general elections in the township.
SHAN reached out to the NLD and SNDP candidates but could not contact them at the time of reporting.
The previous MP, the SNLD’s Sai Moon, passed away in late last year after winning the seat in Laikha’s constituency in the 2015 general election.
