The New Mon State Party (NMSP)’s chair Nai Htaw Mon said his party has not betrayed the Mon people by signing the nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA).
“ Signing the NCA means to discuss politics with the majority. It’s not a betrayal against the people. It was signed to solve politics,” he said in his remarks during the closing ceremony of the national-level political dialogue for ethnic Mon held at the National Stadium in Ye, Mon State on May 7.
He said that the closing ceremony coincided with the 261st anniversary of the fall of the Mon Hanthawaddy Kingdom and told the public not to forget the day.
He continued that the political dialogue aims for the establishment of a new federal union and urged the public to keep this day in their hearts and strive for the reestablishment of a new union.
“We’ve been resisting for 50 years. Some people have said we have betrayed the new Mon State,” the chairman continued.
Nai Htaw Mon also talked about criticisms and attacks against the NMSP for signing the NCA.
“It’s not good that they are only attacking us from outside. It’s not good to look at this from a negative side of view,” he commented.
He explained that the NMSP has believed in the need to solve political issue via political means since it started its resistance and it is only implementing its commitment.
Two months after the signing of the NCA, the NMSP hosted the national-level political dialogue for ethnic Mon in Ye on May 5-7 as part of the official procedure to find solution to political issues.
Around 500 people participated in the discussions on politics, economic, social, and land and natural resources and around 230 points that aim towards the establishment of a federal union have been collected during the three-day dialogue, according to officials from the coordination committee.
