Passenger bus hits landmine in Thaton Township, Mon State, leaving three injured

Three passengers were injured when a passenger bus traveling on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway triggered a landmine attack near Kamasai village in the Don Wun village tract of Thaton Township, Mon State.

On May 21st at approximately 9:00 PM, the bus traveling from Bilin Township to Mawlamyine collided with a mine near Kamasai village.

"The passengers hit by shrapnel were immediately transported to the nearest hospital for medical attention. Sadly the condition of one patient who sustained a critical neck injury from the shrapnel remains severe," said an official familiar with the incident .

The responsible organization for the mine attack on the civilian passenger bus has yet to be determined or confirmed

Among the 10 passengers on the bus, U Hla Min Tun (48), a resident of Myawaddy Township in Karen State, Ko Aung Mon Oo (36), and U Myint Zaw, hailed from Mawlamyinegyun Township in Mon State, respectively, sustained injuries.

The responsible organization for the mine attack on the civilian passenger bus has yet to be determined or confirmed.

In March, a bus traveling on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Road was struck by a landmine near Puteinyoe village in Moekaung village tract, Thaton Township. Following the explosion, the bus came under small arms fire, resulting in a young novice passenger being injured by a bullet.

Similarly, a 12-wheel truck traveling on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Road in Thaton Township was struck by a mine in February.

Passenger buses and vehicles affiliated with Social Relief Associations traveling on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Road, which traverses Thaton Township, are subject to frequent shootings and landmine attacks.  Within the boundaries of Thaton Township, there are frequent confrontations between the Military Council and the joint resistance forces led by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) along the highway.
