Over 200 local residents fled to Myaing Gyi Ngu Camp on August 29 after clashes resumed between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade 5 and the Tatmadaw in Hpapun Township on August 28.

“Only [the residents] of Kan Nyi Naung Village arrived yesterday. I heard that the residents of nearby villages have also fled. They haven’t arrived here yet. The newly arrived people are currently staying inside the ward. They are eating their meals at the homes they are staying in,” an official from Myaing Gyi Ngu IDP Camp told KIC News.

Fighting between the KNLA and the Tatmadaw prompted 256 people from 52 households to flee from Kan Nyi Naung Village and they are currently taking shelter in nearby homes in Myaing Gyi Ngu Ward.

Officials of Myaing Gyi Ngu IDP camp said there are currently unable to provide accommodation to the new IDPs at the IDP camp so they have collected a list of the new IDPs and submitted to Hlaingbwe General Administrator in order to assist them.

The KNLA Brigade 5 sent a letter of objection to the Commander of the Tatmadaw's South Eastern Command on August 29 after the 2nd Infantry Battalion under the Tatmadaw’s 44th Light Infantry Division (LID-44) and the KNLA Brigade 5 exchanged fire in the area between Ein Kone and Noet Hta villages on August 28.

A skirmish also broke out between the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), which is active in Ka Ma Maung Township, and the KNLA Brigade 5 on August 29. KIC News is still investigating the casualty situation from both sides.

KIC News is unable to contact respective armed organizations to inquire about the recent clashes.
