The New Mon State Party (NMSP) and the Mon Unity Party (MUP) issued statements on June 9 strongly condemning the murder of MUP’s candidate Mi Wai Thi Phyo.

Mi Wai Thi Phyo a lawyer and female candidate of Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) for No.4 Kyainseikkyi Constituency represented the Mon Unity Party (MUP) in the 2020 general election.

She was killed by motorcyclists while she was driving her car on the way to Bayarthonezu, Kyarinseikkyi Township, Kayin State on the night of June 8, according to the party officials. According to the bullet shells, the killers must have used AK-47 rifles.

In its statement, the NMSP said that the NMSP designated the killing of Mi Wai Thi Phyo as a very brutal act of violence, and would expose the case and take action against the culprits.

Those who do not want peace and encourage the violent acts, cruelly assassinated Mi Wai Thi Phyo who worked actively with a nationalist spirit. The NMSP strongly condemns their violence acts.

The MUP called on its members and the public to make efforts to uncover the truth, avoid the recurrence of a similar incident, avoid the occurrence of racial and religious conflicts and cooperate with its allied organizations and relevant organizations for the security and tranquility of the entire people.

The MUP strongly condemns any acts that serve as a deterrent to the building of a federal union aspired by all ethnic peoples. Organizations like the European Mon Unity Association (EMUA) and the Mon National Network (MNN) strongly condemned the assassination of MUP candidate Mi Wai Thi Phyo.
