The Chin State's Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) Chairman Dr Mu Thang recently criticized the National League for Democracy (NLD) Government for failing to take the actions, despite pledging to take strong action, against the corruption in Chin State.
“[The NLD government] said there was too much bribery during the previous administration and they would fight it. I want to laugh. Bribery is something one does in secret. It’s not something one gives out in the open. In my opinion, [the government] should just take action and would rather sack [the civil servants] without talking about [fighting corruption] much. Now, they haven’t taken any actions even though they said they would,” Dr Mu Thang said on February 22.
The Chin State Hluttaw Deputy Speaker U Aung Than said on February 16 that he was totally unsatisfied with the tasks carried out by the Chin State government.
“One didn’t need to pay anything to become hired as teachers during U Thein Sein Administration. Now, we heard that one has to pay three or four million kyats to get hired as a teacher. I don’t know this myself and it’s not good to ask. Now, people are saying that there is much bribery now compared to the time under [former Chin State Chief Minister] U Hong Ngai administration of U Thein Sein Government,” said Dr Mu Thang.
According to U Aung Than, it is easy to find out where bribery is taking place and it's quite common in the appointment of civil servants, tender issues, and transfer of the civil servants.
A year after the new government took office, the Chin State Hluttaw Speaker told the media that the Chin State ranks top among bribery list in Myanmar. The government’s spokesperson Salai Isaac Khen responded that the year mentioned on the list was from the previous administration and he did not understand which list the State Hluttaw Speaker had used as a base when he was talking about bribery.
Some public people viewed that it's not easy to investigate the list in details since bribes are being given secretly on mutual agreement.
The NLD widely spoke about combating corruption during the campaign for the 2015 Election.
