Myanmar junta to outlaw motorbike riding in southern Yangon

The Military Council is set to outlaw motorbike use starting on 17 October in Khayan Township, in Yangon's southern region, according to local news reports.

The news has prompted concerns from residents.

"I've heard that riding motorcycles downtown would be prohibited. There will be many issues if they impose the prohibition in that way. The populace is facing severe difficulties,” said a local resident.

Khayan is a township in Yangon region bordering Bago region and the local residents mainly use motorcycles to travel around the region. The Khayan Township Military Council’s staff are likewise prohibited from riding motorcycles in the region, according to locals.

"Employees of the junta's departments are also prohibited from riding motorcycles. Police and troops are also prohibited from riding motorcycles. If they (the Junta) see someone riding a motorcycle, they will confiscate the motorcycles. Those who disobey it will file a lawsuit. There is a warning that if someone drives away after being told to halt, they will be shot and taken into custody,” said another local.

"I don’t want to say much about the issue. The Military Council is already aware of the NUG's one-year plan, which states that PDFs will definitely fight back with fierce assault. I think the junta is taking precautions right now for the upcoming assault by the PDFs," Ko Mee Pwar, an official of the Khayan PDF commented.

The Thanlyin, Twante, Dala, Kun Chankone, Kawmhu, and Kyauktan townships have also been declared motorcycle-free zones by the Military Council.

The townships outside the Yangon municipal boundaries where motorbikes are lawfully permitted to be ridden after permits have been given are the townships where the Military Council is outlawing motorcycle riding.
