More than 22,000 homes and buildings were set on fire between February last year and May 26 this year, according to the Institute for Strategy and Policy (ISP) Myanmar.

15 000 houses were set ablaze in the Sagaing Region, 4 800 in the Magway Region, over 1000 in Chin State, and 400 in Kayah State.

According to ISP Myanmar, more than 7,600 homes and buildings were set ablaze in May of this year, with the biggest number occurring during the coup.

Some houses and buildings were set on fire during the fighting and some were destroyed by mortar explosions fired by junta soldiers.

The junta set fire to homes, religious structures, and schools as they marched through the community, according to a resident of Sagaing Region which was the hardest hit by the fire.

ISP Myanmar said the data on the burning of homes and buildings was based on statements from independent media and civil society groups and that the actual figure could be higher.
